Written Concentration

I've had my horse Mighty Mouse for about 13 years now. I was very young when my family first got Mouse so my older sister had all of the responsibility. As I got older, she gave me a little more power each year. My concentration shows how I gradually got to know Mouse throughout the years. As I made my work, I started out with very non-specific pieces to show how I had not yet known Mouse. My later works are abstracted and the markings are true to Mouse showing how I've grown closer to him.

A majority of my pieces focus on a specific part of the horse. My first piece is a very non-specific black horse that looks nothing like Mouse, showing how I didn't know anything about him. The earlier pieces(1,2) contrast in relationship to my horse with the markings I created since I made them brown while my horse is black and white. My abstracted work represents my unity with Mighty Mouse because I was starting to pay closer attention to his details. For example, the muzzle(9,10) have the same exact spots as Mouse's muzzle and his face(11,12) also have the same markings as his face and the spheres are on the side are also blue like Mouse's eyes. Knowing this, I want the viewer to notice the details and get a sense for my relationship with my horse. As I abstracted my pieces I began to think of different ways to go about making my pieces. For the ears(5), I constructed them on the wheel. A lot of my pieces didn't work out the way I had wanted like my full body horse(1), it exploded in the kiln so I kept one of the pieces and incorporated it into the final work. While making all my pieces I feel I learned what I am able to do with clay, pushing the fragility of my pieces like the mane(4). I also learned a lot more about Mouse and am now aware of almost every marking on his body.
